Dolce & Gabbana unveil their dazzling ’special pieces’ with prices that will make your eyes water
Known for their seriously glitzy designs, Dolce & Gabbana are having lots of fun creating new looks, coming up with a Bt2-million dress decorated entirely with Swarovski Crystal and labelled “Special Piece”.
Even the richest Thai social-ites have been wincing at the price - no one has dared grab a one yet.
But Caroline Roberts of Dolce & Gabbana points out that it’s part of a unique collection of fashion classics that will never be out of season.
Buying one might strip your bank account, but you could be wearing it for the rest of your life.
Inspired by traditional Sicilian styles, the designers wanted to create an aristocratic mood that combines masculinity and femininity.
Beastly looks
Besides the black, crystal-studded dress, D & G have crafted a leopard-skin print from a photo of the real beast. Roberts explains that the designers are obsessed with weaving wildlife into their work. The spots of this creation ripple with big-cat sensuality and the lifelike look has been patented already.
Other “special pieces” have a rock/disco feel, with a bodysuit of sparkling sequins catching the eye.
Elsewhere, a dress of elegant lacy mosaic has been dipped in metallic paint, which adds to the weight on your shoulders. “You don’t have to go to the gym - just wear this dress,” jokes Roberts.
Simple style
Thai fashion journalists were drawn to a silver dress with a filigree of crystals, which looks more practical for eveningwear. But Roberts points out that the
collection isn’t just about extravagance. A balance comes from simple pieces like the leopard-skin long-sleeved blouse with a bow.
Celebrity friends
The 34 “special pieces” are being shown all around the world, but it’s doubtful that any will make it into the wardrobes of hi-so Thai fashionistas. Look out for them on the shoulders of D & G celebrity friends like Madonna, Dita Von Teese and Jennifer Lopez.
