Great Thai and Western food in our beach-side restaurant!

Ask your boat driver to stop at the south-west corner of Bon Island for snorkeling (don’t forget to bring some bread with you to feed the fish!).

Great food by the beach.

‘What About Meω’ Charity Event at Kamalaya Koh Samui

Movie-Stars, Rock Aristocracy, Spiritual Leaders and Grass Roots Activists Together in Grammy Nominated Innovators New Film

Thailand’s first screening of ‘What About Meω’, the latest film from global philosophy and music concept band 1 Giant Leap, will be held at Kamalaya Koh Samui on 14 March, 2009. The event, which is open to outside visitors and Kamalaya guests, will raise funds for The Lotus Flower Foundation.

‘What About Meω’ is the second film from Grammy nominated 1 Giant Leap. Through music and film, 1 Giant Leap explores the universal complexities of human nature. Jamie Catto (Faithless co-founder) and Duncan Bridgeman set out on their journey, recording musical jewels and words of wisdom with the cream of the world’s thinkers, writers and entertainers along the way. The duo travelled to the furthest corners of the planet, to ensure immense cultural diversity in this time capsule of humanity at its most inspirational.

“ We’re on a mission to make self-reflection hip for just a moment, just long enough to save us.” Jamie Catto

Unscripted, with no story board; insightful conversations are captured with some of the most influential people of our era, from Noam Chomsky, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra and Sir Bob Geldof, to Gabrielle Roth, Ram Das, Susan Sarandon and Billy Connolly. Equally insightful contributions come from unknown people just getting on with their lives, from a tribal woman in Africa to an ostracised gay man in America.Together their words reveal how we are connected not only through our creativity and our beliefs but also through our madness.

The stunning music was interwoven, beginning with a pre-composed backing track which then grew and developed as each layer was added by a different musician in a different part of the world. Featuring legends such as REM’s Michael Stipe, Alanis Morissette Maxi Jazz, Stewart Copeland and Carlos Santana, alongside African tribal and Bedouin musicians, Chinese rappers, Gabonese Pygmies and Tuvan throat singers.

4-years, 5 continents and 50 countries later, ‘What About Meω’ is an explosion of music and philosophy, an exquisite feast for the senses and the soul.

‘What About Meω’ will screen at 8:15 pm on Saturday, 14 March in the Yantra Hall at Kamalaya Koh Samui. Admission is 400 THB, with all profits going to The Lotus Flower Foundation, an organization active in raising awareness for Children’s rights (http://www.thelotusflowerfoundation.org). Luang Prabang

Posted by admin On May - 13 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

The bigscreen romance “Sabaidee Luang Prabang” has thousands of Thais flocking to Laos’ former capital, some even hoping to fall in love with a goodlooking tour guide, just like in last year’s movie starring Ananda Everingham.

Luang Prabang certainly seems a likely spot for romance, occupying a long, thin spit of land where the Mekong and Khan rivers meet, but we were there instead for a traditional (though not altogether quiet) Songkran.

The old section of Luang Prabang, a Unesco World Heritage site, is considered Laos’ religious heart - the finest temples stand side by side with renovated French colonial buildings.

year-round except for New Year, when water battles erupt and crowds assemble for cultural shows and the Nang Sangkharn (Queen of Songkran) parade.

The residents spend two or three days cleaning their homes, symbolically scrubbing away the sins of the past year. Everywhere people splash water on each other, the younger ones mixing in bright colours.

By tradition, King Kabilaprom had seven daughters - the Nang Sangkharn, but he lost a quiz challenge to Thammakuman and had to pay the penalty - decapitation.

Since a monarch’s head couldn’t touch the ground, at risk of catastrophe, it was placed on a tray and kept on Mount Krailard, to be brought down every year by one of his daughters for a procession.

The procession is now recreated annually for Songkran, with a vibrant parade overseen by the local woman deemed most beautiful and senior monks seated on a palanquin, over whose hands the faithful pour perfumed water.

Young people run amok in the streets, hurling water and talcum powder at passersby. Thanks to the cooperation and consideration of the celebrants, I managed to keep both my cameras dry.

My first day ended at Dao Fah, the only disco in town, packed with young people having fun. At the stroke of midnight the disco closes, though, leaving no other options except some hot noodles and a return to the hotel.

The next morning we walked along Sisavavong Road to the Royal Palace Museum - the Haw Kham, or Golden Hall built in 1904, when the French ran the country.

The museum blends European and Lao styles. It was the home of Sisavangvong, the last king of Laos, until his death in 1959. The monarchy was abolished 16 years later with the communist takeover.

We paid respects to Prabang, a golden Buddhist statue after which the town is named, and boarded the Nava Mekong, a traditional teak boat with comfortable seats and toilets.

Ninety minutes upstream is the Pak Ou Cave, a spot also known as Tham Ting. It’s filled with Buddha images brought there by the boatmen for good luck.

At New Year many people visit the cave to pray and sprinkle water on the statues.

Lunch on board our little ship made the trip back to Luang Prabang seem shorter than it really was.

Our next destination was Wat Xiang Thong, founded in 1560 by King Setthathilat. The sim - the chapel - is a fine example of the local architecture, with a low, sweeping roof of three tiers.

The temple is on a bank of the Mekong River where it’s joined by its smaller tributary, the Nam Khan.

It’s believed that this is where two hermits who founded Luang Prabang placed the boundary stone for the new settlement.

Another story has Chanthapanit, a betel merchant, building a palace on this site and declaring himself the region’s first king.

During the 1960s Wat Xiang Thong was completely re-modelled. On the back wall, a large flame tree, the tree of life, was depicted in a glass mosaic.

During the invasion of the Black Flag Army from China in the late 1800s, many temples were damaged and destroyed, but Wat Xiang Thong survived because the ethnic rebels’ leader, Deo Van Tri, was ordained there.

A short walk distant is Wat Saen, built in 1718 and admired for its large standing Buddha. Saen means “100,000″ in Lao, and here alludes to the amount of money contributed for the temple’s construction.

Also nearby is Wat Wisunalat, alternatively known as Wat Visoun. The original structure of wood was destroyed by the Black Flag invaders, but the That Makmo - the “watermelon stupa” - was rebuilt in the late 1920s.

Wat Phu Si (or Pra That Phu Si) is opposite the Royal Palace Museum, on the hill in the heart of Luang Prabang. The walk up, 328 steps, isn’t easy, but it’s supposed to signify a test of your faith.

After cloudbursts, people gather rainwater at Pra That Phu Si to use at home, believing it’s been sanctified by arriving through the temple on the city’s highest promontory.

Yasothon Bun Bangfai Rocket Festival

Posted by admin On May - 7 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Yasothon Bun Bangfai Rocket Festival
Date : 8 - 10 May 2009
Venue : Phaya Thaen Park, Mueang District, Yasothon

The underlying logic and science behind the famous rocket festival, scheduled for 8 to 10 May, in the unassuming northeast town of Yasothon, is not to be found in a chemistry laboratory.
While the rocket owners pack as much as 25 kg of black powder into plastic or bamboo pipes to give their homemade missiles take off, the blueprints for this exceptionally noisy festival are traced in the mystical skies ruled by gods. Approaching rain clouds signal the start of the rice planting season, but according to northeastern folklore the first raindrops fall only when the gods are in the mood for love. They need encouragement hence the importance of the Bun Bang Fai, or rocket festival, to stir the mythical community, resident in the heavens, to bless earth with fertility and rain.

One mother of all rockets shoots high into the sky possibly for a kilometre or more stimulating the gods to action. Its vapour trail and height is seen as an omen. The higher it goes, the more rain will fall on the northeast plateau bringing good fortune and a bumper rice harvest.
None of these lofty goals prevent Yasothon’s residents and thousands of visitors from the more earthly pleasures of merry making associated with their homemade rockets.
All sizes and shapes are built around a simple plastic or bamboo pipe packed solid with black powder and fuses. They can be up to 10 metres, or more, in length, as long as they are capable of powering into the skies at blast off. Anything short of that spectacle prompts a chorus of laughter from the crowd and even a few missiles of mud aimed at the head of the hapless rocket owner.
While the rockets compete, the crowd is entertained with comedy, often bawdy with a smattering of dirty jokes and raucous country music. It’s a genuine farming community excuse to have fun and get the planting season off to a good start.
Accidents are few and far between, but as the beer and rice whisky flows, missiles may stutter, wobble or even do some low flying antics over the tents and entertainment stages.
Rocket festivals are held throughout the region and in neighbouring Laos, but Yasothon residents, noted for their sense of humour, inspire an event that draws international visitors attracted by a hilarious three-day party. It embodies I-san’s ability to rise above the hardships of tilling the land.
Ironically, at any other time of the year, Yasothon is a sleepy northeast town that hardly warrants a second glance. Rarely visited by tourists, it is overshadowed by its neighbour Ubon Ratchathani, 98 km to the southeast. Considered the prime tourism gateway to the lower I-san region, Ubon Ratchathani’s airport is served by both the national airline, Thai Airways International, and low-cost airlines. It is possible to hire a car at the airport and drive northwest on Highway 23 to Yasothon.
The town’s hotels are full during this short festival and hotels will double their rates to cash in on the festival’s popularity. There are also hotels in Roi-et, 60 km northwest of Yasothon, while some visitors may decide to stay in Ubon and embark on a daytrip returning after sunset.
